“The message here is that the reasons a nation goes to war are usually various and complicated. The American Civil War is no exception.”
It’s an interesting read, isn’t. That is United States History. 100%, 20/20 vision. I’d like to highlight a few things.
“divided the political leaders of the land” Well. Golly gee wilikers, Batman. That sounds extremely familiar.
“economic system” Yes, we have that now. Actually, we have several different economic systems working with our country now.
“political leaders on both sides were very interested” There’s that catch phrase again. Political Leaders. Yes, we still have several political leaders the most dominate within the Democratic and Republican Parties. Seems the Democrats and Republicans are both very interested in the current state of Unions and other organized labor movements.
“economic system” Again, another catch phrase. So, it seems one large group of people, say Union Members, and those that believe in what they stand for, are in jeopardy of losing their “socio-economic” way of life.
“any political action that took place that threatened” Can I be so bold and suggest stripping “collective bargaining rights”?
“undivided attention” Well, I must confess, it’s been kind of hard to play WoW lately with so much going on in so many places across the Nation.
“religious leaders and newspaper editors” We could also add, now that it’s 2011, multi-media moguls & corporate business men. Considering almost ALL of the United States Media System is owned by very large corporations.
“economic issue first, moral issue second” Am I wrong thinking that this seems very familiar? That this phrase has something to do with our Country, at this very moment?
“The North had an interest in limiting the spread of slavery into the new territories for both purposes of controlling Southern political power AND support of the moral issue.” This definitely has some similarity of current events. What if it read:
“The Corporations had an interest in limiting unions, labor movements and worker freedoms into the new era for both purposes of controlling the entire country’s political power AND support of the moral issue.”
Spookey, I know.
“background issue that remained largely the concern of political leaders” Heck, until I caught a youtube video link from NewsVine of the Wisconsin Protests, I don’t think I would of known. But now I do.
The President “wanted to avoid Civil War” but “the most influential political leaders did not”
One side was “willing to make war to guarantee the propagation of their "right"
One side was “willing to make war in order to put an immediate end to the institution”
Those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Am I making a big deal out of this? Am I looney? Or am I so absofragginlutely correct that it scares the taste out of your mouth and makes you nauseous? And remember the Civil War happened AFTER all those Founding Fathers. You know the Founding Fathers that some people seem to think they're following in their footsteps.
Are we building toward war with each other once again? Would we be willing to follow our convictions to the grave? How would we distinguish between an enemy and a friend? Would all the Democrats and supporters move to one side of the country and the Republicans and their supporters move to the other side? Or are the real enemy, in this hypothetical situation, a little easier to notice?
I love this country. It’s the only one I ever lived in. My people roamed the mountains and valleys of Tennessee and North Carolina, fished the rivers of Kennebec and swam in the waters in the Gulf of Maine long before Mayflower made its journey. My people are also the Welsh and the French. I joking tell people, “I’m an all American mutt”. We are many people from many places with many differences. Now it seems we are US or we are THEM once again. Have we learned from our history? Can we divert a national insanity while the crazy people are in charge? Or will the Gettysburg once again be soaked in the blood of young Americans? Will Valley Forge house Americans willing to die for what they believe in? Will enough be enough and the first body hits the ground?
If? or When?
Tell me what you think, and hope for the United? States of America.
